From journal 1, I have improved tremendously. My accuracy and style improved the most, in my opinion. However, my articulation and rhythm could be improved to achieve that artist level. Throughout this process, I have tried many practice methods. The one that worked well for me was when I play slowly and count carefully to get the rhythm right. Also, I played a measure that I was having trouble with multiple times to get the hang of it. Also, I played before and after the excerpt to get into the style of the piece. Through band practices, my critical listening skills have honed and noticed many other different parts happening at the same time as mine. When they happen and they are the melody, I back down and vice versa. The ascending scales of the excerpts sound the best when they are played with increasing dynamics and I have learned this through developing my critical listening skills to help me fit well into the band.

PJ3: Final Goalsetting

To be on the artist level, I feel I should focus more on the style and and dynamics. Although not many dynamics are written in for my specific excerpts, a professional artist would put in and play his or her own dynamics based on the style of the piece. I tried to incorporate that, but listening in and reflecting, it does not seem to be on the artist level. Also, my tone could be more steady and not faltering. I still had a bit of hesitation in my notes that shouldn't be seen at artist level. This would help make me to the artist level.

PJ 2: Documenting the Practice Method

I used some practice we typically use during school band hours. I first warmed up and then focused my practicing on the accuracy of the notes. Then, after slightly improving that, I tried to get a feel of what part of the song this was and what part the flute played in it to capture the style and right dynamics. Although I feel my dynamics improved, I feel I could improve much more. Anyways, I also noticed my tonguing and slurring techniques and I improved them by practicing tonguing and slurring on the scales. I feel that I have improved thanks to the tips you gave me and I have read ahead to ensure maximum accuracy. Thanks!

PJ1: Setting the Baseline

My own playing here was not the best. I did this in one shot just to see where I am and I'm not in a fantastic standing. My accuracy could be improved by nailing those accidentals and other notes. I thought my tone sounded ok, it wasn't too great and it wasn't too bad. As for articulation, there were some staccato and tenuto parts where I did not get to emphasize because I was focusing on the notes and a bit of the rhythm. This goes along with the style as I didn't really capture the style it was meant to be portrayed as. My first excerpt should be played with a more joyful feel. The blunders I made made it difficult to appreciate it. Also, the second excerpt displays the same kind of feel and I didn't portray it well. I need to work on dynamics and possibly increasing the tempo to get to feel and style of the song in those particular excerpts. As for phrasing, I did not concentrate/notice the phrasings. I have set some goals for myself througout this concert cycle. I hope to identify and portray the excerpts' style and phrase well. I want to develop my technique and be better with articulation and tonguing.

Over the next concert cycle, I would like to improve on many performance aspects. Among the many, I will focus on articulation, rhythm, and intonation. I will try to focus on improving my articulation by doing tonguing and slurring exercises. There are many great example measures of music in Chorale and Shaker Dance II where articulation is needed for it to sound fine. Also, I need to count and focus on my sense of rhythm to improve my playing. I will listen hard to other parts and practice my own counting/rhythm to get the feel of the music. Intonation is also an important aspect to focus on because I play 2nd part and it harmonizes with the 1st part. I have to pay particular attention and work to improve my intonation with the rest of my section and the 1st part section. These are the key aspects I will work to improve upon over the next concert cycle.
